Virtua Cop was the light gun cabinet that always had a line. Sega released it in 1994, and for a lot of players it was the first time bad guys actually reacted to every hit, in polygon worlds where the camera swept around like an action movie.

Teaming up with a buddy, each holding a pistol, was one of those arcade moments you never forget.

History

Sega's AM2 team built it on the Model 2 board. You play as two cops, Rage and Smarty, taking on a criminal organization running illegal weapons.

Its color-coded target rings and its reload-by-shooting-off-screen system became a template for light gun games through the 90s.

How to play

Point the gun at the screen and pull the trigger. A ring locks onto every enemy, shrinking and changing color: when it turns red, they're about to fire.

To reload, shoot off-screen. Watch out for civilians, since hitting them costs you a life. You can pick from three missions of different difficulty, and shooting a gun out of an enemy's hand earns a special bonus.

Fun facts

  • Target rings change color to warn you of danger.
  • The two cops are called Rage and Smarty.
  • The PC version in North America was released as Virtua Squad.

In the arcade

Virtua Cop is coming soon to UsuArcade. It's on our wishlist, and you can vote with I Want to Play It to help bring it in.

In the meantime, suit up in E-SWAT, run and gun with a friend in Metal Slug, or take on Old West outlaws with your crew in Sunset Riders.

Once Virtua Cop lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
