Time Pilot had something hypnotic about it: your plane always dead center, and the whole sky, clouds and enemies included, swinging around you. One minute of watching over somebody's shoulder and you were digging for a quarter.
Plus you were traveling through time, which in a neighborhood arcade in the early 80s felt like pure science fiction.
History
Konami released it in 1982, and it was one of the early projects of Yoshiki Okamoto, who later played a big role at Capcom.
Its free-roaming scrolling in every direction set it apart from the fixed-screen and vertical shooters that filled arcades back then.
How to play
Steer your plane in any direction with the joystick and fire straight ahead. The sky scrolls endlessly every which way, and enemies come at you from all sides.
Each era has its own enemies: biplanes in 1910, WWII fighters in 1940, helicopters in 1970, jets in 1982 and UFOs in 2001. Shoot down enough and a huge mothership shows up; take it out and you jump to the next era. Rescuing parachutists earns bonus points.
