If the first Fatal Fury was SNK's answer to the fighting game boom, the sequel was SNK slamming its fist on the table. Eight fighters to pick from right out of the gate, stages all over the world, and a two-plane system that let you dodge by hopping into the background.
In arcades with a Neo Geo cabinet, it was the alternative to Street Fighter II. Some players swore by Ryu, others wouldn't give up Terry Bogard for anything, and everyone kept one eye on everybody else's matches.
History
SNK released Fatal Fury 2 on the Neo Geo in 1992. In Japan the series is called Garou Densetsu. Where the original only let you choose from three characters, this one opened the roster to eight playable fighters.
Among the newcomers was Mai Shiranui, who debuted here and became one of SNK's most famous faces. The final boss, Wolfgang Krauser, also earned his spot in SNK history.
How to play
There are four buttons: light and heavy punch, light and heavy kick. Special moves come from joystick motions, and when your health is nearly gone, you can unleash an especially powerful desperation move.
The signature feature is the plane system: each stage has a front lane and a back lane, and you can jump between them to dodge attacks or catch your opponent off guard. Certain moves are built to hit someone in the other lane, so they're worth learning.
