Bagman wasn't in every arcade, but if you found one, you didn't forget it: a masked thief working his way through a mine in search of money bags, with two guards hot on his heels. It came out of France in 1982 and had a charm all its own next to the Japanese games of the day.

At UsuArcade it's waiting at its cabinet: grab a seat, drop in a coin and head down the mine while the rest of the lobby counts how many bags you haul out.

History

Bagman was made by French company Valadon Automation in 1982; in France it was called Le Bagnard, and Stern brought it to the U.S. It was one of the few European arcade hits of that era.

Its mine spread across several connected screens, with elevators, mine carts and ladders, was bigger and more varied than most platformers of its time, and years later it got a sequel, Super Bagman.

How to play

You explore a mine spread across three connected screens, climbing down ladders and riding elevators up. Your job is to grab the money bags and carry them to the wheelbarrow on the surface. You move slower while you're carrying a bag, so pick your route carefully.

The guards chase you nonstop, but you can fight back: grab a pickaxe to bonk them for a while, or drop a bag on them from above to knock them out. And watch out for the mine carts, which run over anyone in their way.

Fun facts

  • It's a French game: back home it was called Le Bagnard.
  • Stern distributed it in the U.S.
  • Two players alternate on one cabinet, each with their own score.

In the arcade

Bagman was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.

Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
