BurgerTime is one of those ideas that could only come out of an '80s arcade: you're a chef assembling giant burgers by walking across the ingredients, while a hot dog, a fried egg, and one seriously angry pickle chase you up and down the ladders.
It sounds silly, and it's totally addictive. Every stage is a little puzzle of routes and traps, and there's nothing more satisfying than dropping a bun just as three bad guys walk underneath it.
History
Data East created BurgerTime in 1982. Bally Midway handled the U.S. arcade release, which helped make it a big hit stateside. The hero is Chef Peter Pepper.
Its mix of platforms, ladders, and maze-chase gameplay, plus a Saturday-morning-cartoon sense of humor, made it a classic of the era, and it was ported to just about every home computer and console around.
How to play
Steer the chef with the joystick across platforms and ladders. Every time you walk the full length of an ingredient, it drops down a level. Once every piece of every burger lands on the plates at the bottom, you clear the stage.
The bad guys (Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg) never let up. Squash them by dropping an ingredient on top of them, or ride them down on one for even more points. You also get a few shakes of pepper to freeze them for a moment; save it for when you're cornered, because it runs out fast.
Fun facts
- The chef's name is Peter Pepper.
- The enemies are Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg.
- Dropping ingredients with enemies riding on them multiplies your points.
In the arcade
BurgerTime isn't in the arcade yet. It's on the wish list, and you can hit “I Want to Play It” on this page to bump it up. Coming soon to UsuArcade if the votes come in.
Meanwhile, if you love ladder-climbing chase games, you can already play Space Panic, Donkey Kong, and Pac-Man in the arcade. And if fast-paced food service is your thing, Tapper is pouring too.
