Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo was the curveball cabinet of the 90s arcade. Surrounded by straight-up fighting games, Capcom had its fighters duke it out by stacking gems. Turned out it was every bit as addictive as any versus game, and the loser was always digging out another quarter for a rematch.
Each player gets a well, and down below two big-headed characters slug it out depending on how well you chain your combos.
History
Capcom released it in 1996, riding the popularity of Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. Despite the name it's not a fighting game; it's a head-to-head puzzle game that borrowed those characters in super-deformed style, with huge heads and tiny bodies.
It came to several home consoles and over time earned a reputation as one of the best competitive puzzlers of its era.
How to play
Pairs of gems in four colors drop into your well. Line up same-colored gems in a square or rectangle and they fuse into a bigger power gem. To clear them you need a crash gem of the same color, which blows up the whole connected group.
Everything you break drops into your opponent's well as counter gems, each with a number showing how many turns until it turns into a regular gem. Chaining combos and smashing big power gems is how you bury the other player. Fill your well to the top and you lose.
Fun facts
- Every character drops counter gems in its own color pattern, so your pick changes your strategy.
- The diamond, which shows up every so often, wipes out every gem of one color.
- The 'Turbo' in the name nods to Street Fighter II's long line of updated versions.
