Puyo Puyo looks harmless, with its smiling colored blobs and its cartoon heroine, right up until you discover chains. Setting up a reaction where one group pops, the blobs above drop into place and pop too, again and again, while garbage rains down on your opponent, is one of the most satisfying things an arcade puzzler has ever pulled off.

It isn't in the UsuArcade arcade yet, but it's on our wishlist. If you're itching to build chains again, give it your vote.

History

Puyo Puyo was created by Compile, and Sega released the arcade version in 1992. That arcade version is where head-to-head play against a friend or the computer became the heart of the game, and where it took off in Japan.

Outside Japan a lot of players first met it wearing different characters: on the Genesis it became Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and on the Super NES it was Kirby's Avalanche. The series with its original cast, including Arle and Carbuncle, is still going today.

How to play

Pairs of puyos, little colored blobs, fall from the top, and you can move and rotate them. Connect four or more of the same color and they pop. If that makes other puyos drop into a new group, you've got a chain, and every link multiplies the punishment.

Everything you clear turns into clear garbage puyos that fall onto your opponent's board, and those only break when colored puyos pop next to them. Whoever fills up the drop column loses. The key is not to cash in every group right away, but to build a long chain and trigger it at the perfect moment.

Fun facts

  • The heroine is the young sorceress Arle, with her sidekick Carbuncle.
  • On the Genesis it was reworked for the West as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
  • On the Super NES it came out in the West as Kirby's Avalanche.

In the arcade

Puyo Puyo is coming soon to UsuArcade. It's on the arcade wishlist and you can vote for it with the “I want to play it” button; the most-wanted games get added first.

Until then, the arcade has other puzzlers for friendly rivalries: Tetris, the king of falling blocks; Puzzle Bobble, with its colorful bubbles; and Pang, for popping balloons with a buddy. Free in your browser, with chat, spectators and arcade high scores.

Once Puyo Puyo lands in the arcade, you'll be able to play it online two-player, each on your own phone or PC, in the same game.
