Pengo is one of those games that won everybody over on the first try: a lovable penguin, a maze of ice blocks and a pack of critters that never stopped chasing you. Sega released it in 1982, and its mix of maze game and puzzle made it one of the most beloved cabinets in the arcade.

At UsuArcade it's ready and waiting at its cabinet: grab a seat, drop in a coin and start shoving ice while the rest of the lobby watches how many Sno-Bees you can flatten in one shot.

History

Pengo came out in 1982 under the Sega name. It arrived during the maze game boom that followed Pac-Man, but with an idea all its own: the maze isn't fixed, it's built out of blocks you can push and smash.

Its charming hero and upbeat music made it a big hit in Japan and Europe, and the penguin kept turning up in Sega compilations and remakes for years.

How to play

You guide Pengo through a maze of ice blocks. Push a block with open space in front of it and it slides until it hits something, crushing any Sno-Bees in its path; if it can't move, it shatters. Crushing several enemies with the same block is worth a lot more points.

You can also shove the outer walls to stun any Sno-Bees touching them and then walk right over them. Every stage has three diamond blocks: line them up and you score a huge bonus.

Fun facts

  • The enemies are called Sno-Bees, and they hatch from some of the ice blocks.
  • Lining up the three diamond blocks earns a big point bonus.
  • Two players alternate on one cabinet, each with their own score.

In the arcade

Pengo was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.

Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
