Few cabinets were easier to get from across the room: a frog, a road, a river. Getting that frog home in one piece was a whole different story. Frogger had that magic that got your mom, your little cousin and the coolest kid at the arcade all dropping quarters into the same machine.

At UsuArcade it's ready to play in your browser with nothing to install, catchy music and that soul-crushing splash when you mistime a jump included.

History

Konami made Frogger in 1981, and Sega/Gremlin brought it to North America. It hit right in the golden age of arcades and quickly became one of the most recognizable games of the era.

The idea was a breath of fresh air: no shooting at all. The challenge was moving smart, reading traffic and being patient, and that pulled in tons of players who had never touched a space shooter.

How to play

The joystick moves your frog one hop at a time. The bottom half of the screen is a highway with cars, trucks and speeding racers; the top half is a river you can only cross by riding logs and turtles. Watch out for turtles that dive and for alligators.

Fill all five homes at the top before time runs out. Flies are worth bonus points, and escorting the lady frog riding the logs scores extra too. Fill all five and the next round comes back faster.

Fun facts

  • There's no fire button. Just the joystick, which was pretty unusual in 1981.
  • Hop into a home slot with a gator peeking out and you lose a life.
  • Its looping background tune is one of the most remembered things about the cabinet.

In the arcade

Frogger was a take-turns game, and that's how it plays on UsuArcade, just online: invite your friend to your cabinet once they're in the lobby and trade turns, each on your own phone or PC. While one plays, the other watches live.

Nothing to install: it runs in your browser, gamepad supported, and every game starts with INSERT COIN, free. Everyone else in the lobby can watch and chat, and scores go up on the arcade's high score board.
